Mankind was able to store 295 exabytes (equivalent to 1,073,741,824 gigabytes) of information-until 2007 - in both analog and digital media, says a study published in Science Express.
The figure is also equivalent to 1.2 billion hard drives with an average of common data storage.
Research at the University of Southern California and University of Catalonia analyzed consumption, transmission and storage of information between 1986 and 2010.
"We measure how much information exists in the world, how much information you store on devices and how much information can be transmitted," said Martin Hilbert of the University of Southern California.
The study suggests that 2002 was the year in which digital information (such as that used in computers) overtook analogue (one that can be measured by physical instruments).
faster than the economy since 2007
And 94% of human memory is stored in digital media.
"digital information grow 9 times faster than the economy. If all the world's computers catch fire at the same time, a second could cause the same amount of nerve impulses that make a human brain, "said Hilbert.
The digital information is growing nine times faster than the economy.
According to the author until 2007 the information was stored representing a column of CDs would go completely from the Earth to the Moon and still one quarter of that distance.
addition, the rate at which information spreads very fast, " Our storage capacity doubles approximately every 3 years, four times faster than it grows our economy, " said the researcher.
"While these numbers are impressive compared to the data capacity of nature are still very small," he added.

Research published in Science Express also found that the information received by the people so far zetabytes equals 2, or the equivalent of 175 newspapers a day per person, while each individual information is transmitted about six newspapers.
Last year scientists claimed that humanity had reached 1 zettabyte of data, equivalent to about 250 billion movies. It is estimated that 2020, digital storage of humanity will reach 35 ZB.
